Enrique Garrigós Monerris
From my very first memories, there was no other smell or taste like that of the smell of turron all over my parent's house. I can still picture in my mind all the cheerfulness and excitement in my family at the beginning of September, alter the traditional local holidays of the Moors and Christian which meant the beginning of the nougat production season. Suddenly, it was like everything was about nougat bars.
My father, Enrique Garrigos Monerris, used to the tell story of my grandparents struggling, when at the end of 19 century they used to go to Santander to sell their turron for Christmas. All those memories are deep in my mind and they have made it possible to see the world of turron, not only as work but as a way of life.
This history and my memories have been such an influence in my life, that I have made sacrifices not only on behalf of my company but on all the companies within the sector from Jijona and furthermore through one of the main emblems, the regulating council from Jijona and Alicante' s turron.
Looking back over the history of turron in my family, I cannot retain my feelings. When I see that alter so many years of struggling, through good and bad times, we still go on and I am sure that many of the grandchildren of customers who bought turron from our family market stall in Santander are still buying our turron which is produced with the same love and care that it was in the old days.
I can say that I am very proud that after more than 40 years from my first turron production season, I still keep my grandparents vision untouched in my memory and smell the aroma of turron when it is all around Jijona indicating another turron season is starting again.
Enrique Garrigós Monerris set a commercial network which allowed him to open his first factory in the old quarter of Jijona in the 70's. In 1984 the company's plans would increase the production and as a result, a new factory had to be opened in the local industrial estate "Segorb" where nowadays, the company's facilities have 4900m2 with an annual production capacity over a million kg. Most of the production is focused on Jijona and Alicante turron, tortas and pastries.
During the last thirty years, the company Enrique Garrigós Monerris has been run by the grand grandchild of the founders who started the business. It has expanded its distribution network to the main Spanish regions and even in international markets, especially In U.S.A. and Latin-American.
Since 1998, the company has introduced quality standards throughout all its production processes, Enrique Garrigós Monerris was the first company in the sector to be certified by ISO 9000 and recently has achieved the highest possible score, the most important within the food industry in the field of food security, "The International Food Standard".
